Gold – David Bellamy Conservation Award
We received some excellent news this week! David Bellamy has awarded all five of our holiday parks with the ‘Gold – David Bellamy Conservation Award 2014/15 accolade’. This award to all of our holiday parks is a great achievement and we will continue to improve, encourage and educate on the importance of sustaining the environment, encouraging wildlife, reducing the use of energy, minimising waste and supporting the local community.
The British Holiday Home Parks Association has provided further information about the award:
The David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme is one of the longest running green tourism awards in the UK. The idea of the scheme was first sown when David Bellamy gave a talk to members of the camping, caravanning and holiday home park industry in which he gave the audience members a challenge to be part of the environmental solution and not part of the problem. David was then invited to visit many parks and was amazed at the wide range of work that the most forward-thinking owners were doing for the environment. David was so impressed that a partnership was formed between the Conservation Foundation (the environmental organisation that David co-founded to help businesses get involved in conservation) and the British Holiday & Home Parks Association to set up an award scheme.
The scheme started with a pilot programme in 1996 and the first awards were made in 1997. As is the case today, assessors for the scheme were drawn from local wildlife trusts and other local conservation bodies. The idea behind the awards has also remained the same since those early days: to celebrate what the best parks are doing for the British countryside and to encourage others to follow their lead. “One of the first comments David made about the scheme remains true today: “My dream is to upgrade all caravan parks up to some sort of conservation status so that they can educate the visiting public and help them respect and care for the countryside.”
In the years since it was set up, the David Bellamy Conservation Awards scheme has grown in scope and stature and has even inspired similar award schemes abroad – most notable the Gumnut award scheme in Australia which plays a similar role in that country’s camping and caravanning world. The scheme has developed organically, but saw a major revision of its judging criteria in 2007/8. This was done to acknowledge the increasing importance of sustainability issues such as energy saving on both the industry, public and governmental agendas. With more and more businesses realising that being green is something that is well worth doing, the future of the scheme looks set to be as exciting and innovative as its past.

Finland, Hull & Beaulieu
The group from Finland
11 September we welcomed a group of holiday park owners from Finland to view Golden Cap, Highlands End and Larkfield Holiday Parks for the day. It was a very interesting visit with us being able to ask questions about how holiday parks are managed in Finland and they were very interested in the way we manage holiday parks in the UK. The group are staying in the UK for a couple of days and have planned to view some other holiday Parks within the BH&HPA for research before returning home.
We also accompanied the group to Freshwater Holiday Park in Burton Bradstock and the holiday park team were very accommodating. It was a very interesting tour and gave us the opportunity to discuss how the tourism season had been this year and view new developments on the park. We would like to wish the Finland group a good onwards journey and maybe one day we will be able to go to Finland and view their holiday parks.
At the beginning of this week a group of us from WDLH attended the Lawns Show – The Caravan Extravaganza Weekend in Cottingham near Hull. At the show there were over 100 caravan holiday homes to view and the models for 2015 were very exciting. The show gave our CHH sales team a great insight into the models to expect next year.
We are now looking forward to the Beaulieu Show – Holiday Caravan 2014, from the 26th – 28th September where we will have our own WDLH trade stand.

Hat Festival & Events coming soon to West Dorset Leisure Holidays
The fifth Bridport Hat Festival took place last weekend, with plenty of day and night entertainment. Walking around Bridport Market was great fun with all the shoppers in fun and fancy hats. There was plenty of entertainment for all the family with children’s face painting, felt making, music bands and buskers, dog competition, you name it and I am sure it was happening somewhere in the town! Have a look at the website ‘Bridport Hat Festival’ and note the date for next year.
27th & 28th September we have the ‘second world war’ weekend at Highlands End which should be a great event and an opportunity to wear your 1940s outfit and the hat you purchased at the Hat Festival.
Towards the end of the season we hold our Annual Owners Evening and the tickets are now available from all holiday park receptions. All the Caravan Owners are welcome to attend and the dates are:
Saturday 4th October – Highlands End & Graston Copse Owners Evening
Saturday 11th October – Golden Cap, Larkfield & Sandyholme Owners Evening
The owner’s evenings are a great opportunity for the holiday home owners to meet each other and talk with the team from West Dorset Leisure Holidays. We will be providing a buffet, a disco and there is always plenty of dancing! For further information please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01308 426912.
